Understanding Technology-Waste

What is Technology Waste

Technology Waste refers to discarded or obsolete technology-related assets, including both electronic and non-electronic components. It encompasses a broader range of materials than e-waste (electronic waste) and includes:

  • Electronic devices – Computers, laptops, servers, smartphones, tablets, and other IT equipment.
  • Networking and telecom gear – Routers, switches, modems, cables, and communication devices.
  • Power infrastructure – Batteries, UPS systems, power distribution units (PDUs), and generators.
  • Medical equipment – Diagnostic machines, imaging devices, and patient monitoring systems.
  • Accessories and peripherals – Keyboards, mice, docking stations, printers, and external storage devices.
  • Software and digital waste – Outdated software, licenses, and digital assets that require secure data destruction.

Technology Waste in Australia

Technology Waste, is a rapidly growing concern in Australia.  Australia is one of the highest producers of e-waste per capita, with millions of tonnes of discarded technology accumulating each year. In 2021, the country generated approximately 650,000 tonnes of e-waste, with projections indicating this could rise to about 930,000 tonnes by 2035. Sustainability Victoria

The National Waste Report 2022 reveals that of the 500,000 tonnes of e-waste in Australia in 2020-21, 54% was sent to recyclers, while 35% ended up in landfills. Ecocycle Mercury Recycling

These statistics highlight the critical need for improved e-waste management practices in Australia to enhance recycling rates and reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste.

How to Manage Technology-Waste

 Responsible tech-waste management involves a three-step process:

  1. Refurbish: Repairing and upgrading devices for reuse, extending their lifespan.
  2. Repair: Fixing minor faults to restore functionality and prevent premature disposal.
  3. Recycle: Ethically breaking down non-repairable devices to recover valuable materials and safely dispose of hazardous waste.
